2018 New Year’s Resolutions, Goals, & Word of the Year!

It seems surreal to be chatting today about 2018- I mean, what?! The year’s just seem to be flying by faster & faster, and I’m just trying to keep up!

I know not everyone loves New Year’s Resolutions & goals, but last year I set some really intentional ones– and I’m proud to say I accomplished all but 2 (and even those I made some great strides!) Setting concrete goals for myself helps to keep me on track and gives me something to strive for. Sharing them through the blog is such a great way to keep me accountable to them & to get more personal with y’all and share a piece of my heart!

So, without further ado, I’m thrilled to share my Personal & Blog Resolutions for 2018 with y’all!

ONE || The Year of “YES”

I am really excited about this goal! This year I turn 30 (!!!) and I feel like I’ve come to a place where I need to take a few more chances, stop second guessing myself & the Lord’s plans, and just learn to say “YES” to all the things. I want to open myself up to new experiences & opportunities and not hesitate to take a chance! It’s also my heart’s desire to say “yes” to where ever the Lord may lead me this year. Something I learned (and am still learning) is that when the Lord says “no” or “not now” I have to say “yes Lord, that’s your will.” This is certainly not a natural human reation, but I want to be a woman focused on the heaven’s above and living a life that says “yes” to his calling. This is maybe the scariest goal for the year (who knows where it will lead?) but one I am most excited about seeing through!

TWO || Read the Bible Cover to Cover

If my first resolution is the scariest, then this one is the most intimidating! While I strive to spend time in the Bible, if I’m being honest it certainly hasn’t been on a daily basis. And in order to say yes to the Lord’s callings- I need to be able to hear them! You guessed it, the only way to hear them is to know the Lord well enough to discern his voice & we do that through spending time in his word. So here I am making a HUGE commitment to spend daily time in the word so that each day I can draw closer to God & reach this milestone! (If this is something that interests you, I will be using this bible to guide my readings.)

THREE || Cultivate Community

I’ve now lived in St Petersburg for five years (I know I can’t believe it either!) but it wasn’t until about a year and a half ago that I felt like I was really building my community here. By that I mean, building friendships beyond work & mutually attended meetings and having friends I could call for fun Friday nights, happy hours, events, and just fun shopping trips. In 2018 I want to deepen these friendships and continue to cultivate a community here that supports and encourages each other.

FOUR || Stop Trying to “Keep up with the Joneses”

I can admit it y’all… 2017 was a year in which I tried WAY to hard to keep up with the Joneses and my wallet suffered terribly from it! And what I learned by the end of the year, is that it wasn’t worth it and I certainly wasn’t being authentic to myself. This year I want to invest my time, energy, & money in moments, experiences, & “things” that I am passionate about and truly bring me joy- and be content even when that doesn’t look like everyone else’s reality! I also know that I need to scale back, and do a better job of living within my means, because the reality is that I am living on one salary – and I can’t just buy “all the things.” I need to craft contentment where I am at.

FIVE || Go on a Date a Month

Well this is kind of an intimidating goal too! (Must be the year for that!) I don’t talk a ton about being single in your late twenties, but that’s simply because it’s HARD- and I have not done a very good job of making time for dating. So my goal this year is to challenge myself to go on at least one date a month. If that means getting “on the apps” and totally putting myself out there- then so be it! I’ve got to prioritize dating if I want to see any results! (Ladies if you have any advice I would love to hear it! :))

One of my final goals from 2017 was to buy my own domain name & make the switch to WordPress- both of which I am proud to say are currently in process! “The Switch” will be live any day now (I’m waiting on official approval of the new site from Google!) and I cannot wait for you to see the new Girl Meets Bow! Along with the new look for the blog, I want to bring all sorts of new ideas! πŸ™‚

ONE || Introduce New Verticals & Diverse Content to the Blog

This was one of my goals in 2017, and I loved seeing how y’all reacted to more personal content, learning more about my job, & seeing behind the scenes of my trips. All of this as inspired me to continue to bring diverse and more personal content to Girl Meets Bow in 2018! While inspiring y’all through affordable fashion will always be the root of this blog, there is just so much more to share & i’ve spent several weeks thinking & planning on new ways to do it! Here are some ideas (and I’d love your feedback)!

New Series:

“Highlight Reel” – Similar to a “weekend recap” but on a monthly basis; I’ll share pictures and stories of what I saw & did the previous month. This will be a totally unfiltered & unedited look at my life “behind the scenes” and hopefully will help you to get to know me better!

“Happy Hour” – Still playing with timing of this one (whether it will be weekly or bi-weekly) but this would be a round-up of articles I think are interesting, great product finds, fun finds, etc. I think the first one will launch this Friday & would love to get y’alls feedback so I can make it something y’all love reading!

“Let’s Get Local” – I want to do a better job of highlighting all of the amazing spots here in the Tampa Bay area! There is such diverse cultural attractions and things to do, and I would love to share that with y’all (and hopefully make you want to come visit!) πŸ™‚ I love being a Florida girl and want to share more of that life with you!

“Inspired By…” – There are so many bloggers and creatives who inspire me on a daily basis and I’ve been thinking it would be fun to share them with you! I’m still rolling the logistics around, but thinking it could be a monthly interview series? Is that something you’d want to read? Or would you rather me just share blogs, sites, creatives in list form quarterly? Or through IG stories? Would love feedback!

Blogging Tips/Tricks (I still need a cute name for this one!!) – While I am certainly not the biggest blogger out there, I still get tons of questions on how I started the blog, balance it with my job, and tips/tricks to grow. So I thought each month I could share a post on those topics.

One Piece X # of Ways (also need good name for this one!) – In the spirit of “not keeping up with the Joneses” I want to do more with the clothes/accessories that I have & inspire y’all to get more mileage out of your clothing as well. So I’d like to do some series where I show you multiple ways to wear an item of clothing throughout the season. Or also how to transition that item from one season to another.

Expand Current Series:

Dressing Room Diaries – Would like to be more consistent in creating this content since y’all always love them! Working on making this a monthly series.

Book Reviews – Continue to make time to read so that I can bring you reviews monthly.

Workweek Chic – As a girl who is in the office 5 days a week, I did a terrible job this year bringing you work looks! ha! Maybe because I have to think about it so much in my “real life?!” But I know SO many of y’all are living that #officelife too so I’d like to bring more relatable work wear to the blog. Let me know what type of office you work in/your dress code so I can brainstorm some ideas!

Travel Guides & Travel Coverage – Travel recaps/guides take a lot of time, so I often put them on the back burner when I’m swamped. But I do love sharing these & they are a great way for me to look back on fun memories, so I want to do a better job of sharing these this year.

TWO || Introduce a Non-Profit Factor

This is my murkiest goal, because I’m not really sure how this would work, but it is on my heart to explore the possibility! I’ve been spending a lot of time pondering how I can use this platform that I’ve been given to give back and empower girls and women who need it. Is it simply sharing out local opportunities and organizations? Is it creating my own? Is it partnering with a community group? Like I said, I’m really unsure how to bring this one to fruition but writing it out gives me continued inspiration to pursue it!

THREE || Brand my Instagram

I’ve been playing with some different editing styles & content on IG during Q4 to figure out the right fit for “me” and what feels authentic and true but also offers y’all something different than what you are getting on the blog. (If you’re not already, feel free to follow me here) I’d love to know what you most want to see on IG (fashion, life, work, etc) and what content you like to see there vs. what you’re getting on the blog! Instagram has never come as naturally to me as the blog, but it is my goal to pour some creative juices into it this year!

I’ve never done a “word of the year” before, but for about the past month I couldn’t get the word “savor” out of my head, and I just kind of knew that with this being a milestone year for me I really needed to focus on savoring each moment and experience. You see, I’m a planner and a dreamer by nature- so I’m always jumping ahead to the next thing/moment/to-do and just kind of “checking off” the current thing. This year I would find myself out to dinner with friends & mentally thinking “ok when i get home I need to add xyz to the blog post and then walk Buddy and then prep this dish for tomorrow night’s meeting…etc!” Such a bad habit! When your continually jumping to the next, then you can’t appreciate what is, or how special the current moments are. And y’all, with how fast time is flying by, I just want to grab a little more of it and stop and savor each sweet gift of time the Lord has given me. So this year I will be focusing on “savoring” life! πŸ™‚

Whelp! There you have it… all the dreams, goals, and plans that I have for 2018!

Above all else, at the end of the year, I just really want to be able to say:

Cheers to the best new year’s ever sweet friends! Let’s make this the best one yet!

    so excited for your 2018 content & you DON'T look thirty at all–lol–I am in the same single boat so I do love your 'date a month' goal–Happy New Year, Gentry!–Katelyn/www.theyellowspectacles.com

    I absolutely LOVED reading your goals, Gentry! I could not agree more about this being the Year of Yes and jumping head first into all the opportunities that come my way. I also completely agree about making more time to date – this is something I really want to work on as well. It's so hard to date, but I know that in order to get the results I want, I am going to have to put myself out there!

    You have some BIG goals this year!! Very ambitious! I hope you can do everything you want. Personally, I had a lot of trouble with reading the Bible in a year because I found that reading to cover chapters was not the right way for me to do it. Reading it in the first place is the most important thing!
    I'm really excited about every single one of the new series you have planned! I honestly can't pick which one sounds best.
