The Myth of Doing it All

Think that you’re the only one not “doing it all”- I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone!

“I don’t know how you do it all.”

“I could never get done everything that you do.”

“Gosh, how do you do it all?”

These phrases are some that I hear regularly. I don’t share that because I think that they are true, or by any means to “brag” on having a busy schedule- it’s actually been on my heart to share this for awhile because I think a lot of us live under the myth that we are the only ones NOT “doing it all!”

I share a lot with y’all how I juggle many different hats and responsibilities: a full time job, the blog + associated social media, friendships & a social life, my family, traveling, non-profit work, Buddy… like pretty much any other woman the list could go on and on! But one thing I never want people to think is that I’ve somehow figured out the secret to “doing it all” – because I certainly haven’t! I was just chatting with some girlfriends this week and joking that I’m a hot mess – just well dressed! I look like I’ve got it all together on the outside but inside… well that’s a different story! I constantly feel like if I’m holding the ball in one court I’m dropping it in another. Totally on top of my game at work? Haven’t blogged in three days! Sharing tons of IG stories? Need to catch up on my bible study! Seriously y’all- the struggle is more real than you know (or maybe you do!)

My company’s former CEO was an amazing woman who definitely seemed to “do it all.” I’ll always remember one time when she met with a group of the women in the company she shared with us this tidbit: “You know how I do it all? I don’t!” What she shared was that every day is a different balancing act, and that one day one part of your life is going to get more attention, and the next day that attention is probably going to shift. If family is #1 on Monday, then maybe it’s a work project Tuesday and a non-profit event Wednesday. Our lives are a constant balancing act- but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be perfectly balanced! (Although I know that social media certainly makes it seem that way!)

So if you are feeling the pressure, I just want to encourage you that you are not alone! We are all juggling, balancing, and trying to keep as much of our hot mess covered up as we can! ha.

I remember reading a quote that, loosely translated, stated that being busy wasn’t something to brag about – and that hit me! It’s so hard to juggle so many things at once, but this society has almost engrained in us that it’s just being a BOSS BABE. Hard to believe juggling can actually cause depression and anxiety in their worst forms. Yet, everyone out there is juggling something! It’s just good to know we’re not alone – and it’s okay to say we’re busy (and that we might need a BREAK) haha!
