How I Stay Positive

As a girl who always sees the glass of life half-full, I’m sharing my tips on how to stay positive!

Hey y’all! Happiest of Mondays! I know last week was a bit quiet around here- so thank you for bearing with me through the business that was my work week 🙂 Sometimes other things just have to take the back burner so I can focus on my #1 responsibility which is my 9-5! I do have to say though, that it sure feels great to get back into the swing of things today. So much fun to share with y’all!

I figured there was no better way to start the week than by chatting about something so important to me- looking on the bright side of things 🙂 I know that some people are naturally optimists and some are pessimists (and there is nothing wrong with either of course!) But I do believe that we can hone our thoughts and reactions to lean one way or the other and we can teach ourselves to see more positives than negatives. So, today I’m sharing the ways that I stay positive and what that looks like lived out in my day to day!

Oh me, oh my- this is one of the most important lessons I learned a few years ago and to this day it has stuck with me and grounded my thought-life. It sounds simple, but it’s a groundbreaking idea- there is a distinct difference between happiness and joy. Simply put, happiness is conditional; it’s an emotional reaction to something that is happening to us (getting a promotion, finding a pair of shoes on sale, winning a football game, etc). As circumstances change and new things happen to us, you may find that your reaction is no longer one of happiness. But does a happy or unhappy situation mean that you are with out joy? NO!

Joy isn’t conditional and doesn’t stem from emotions or circumstances. Joy comes from knowing who we are, what we want, and (for me) knowing that I am a daughter of God. Whether you are grounded in the Christian faith or not, knowing the profound truth of who you are at the core & what you stand for gives joy that isn’t dependent on other people or circumstances. So, when ever I find myself unhappy I am quick to reset my mind to remind myself that while the situation may not be making me happy- I am still living a life filled with joy!

I know, I know… going through tough stuff is no fun and can be downright hurtful, painful, and dark. And while I keep it light and happy around these parts I’ve had my moments of despair just like anyone else. After I remind myself that I’m in an unhappy circumstance but a joyful life, I then ask myself, “what is this teaching me?” While I don’t really love the hard knock way of learning, when I start to understand how a situation is growing my character, emotions, and relationships it allows me to be thankful & grateful even in the midst of hardship.

This is a reminder/trick that I use ALL the time to bring a dose of joy to my day and to help me to stay positive… think about all the little things you are grateful for! I mean, I’m almost always thankful for a good cup of coffee (or three!) in the mornings… 🙂 Seriously though, if you slow down and take account of all the small moments & things that fill our lives, oftentimes you will find that there is SO much to be grateful for and that attitude of gratitude just spills over to all things in your path!

There may be moments when I want to be in a different stage of life already, sometimes I’m thinking “just get me there already!” And when I’m fighting against where I’m at those are the times when I find myself fighting to stay positive. But when I stop and embrace the current stage of my journey- I mean really get grateful for where I’m at and what God is working at in my life- I find that I can’t help but be filled with both happiness and joy! If you are always looking at your circumstances with a frown, it’s sure going to be hard to enjoy it! But when you can see it for the growth opportunity it is (and the stepping stone to where you want to be) it helps me to embrace the journey and find ways to love each and every moment of my story! One of my favorite reminders is this “Life’s to short to not love the story God has planned for you.” I constantly remind myself that each moment is something special that God is using to ink my chapter, my narrative, and my unique book. Gosh I can’t wait to see what comes next!
