What I’ve Learned About Working from Home

It’s hard to believe that I’ve now been been working from home for three weeks and it’s starting to become my “new normal” (as well as yours I’m sure!). It been challenging in some ways, and seamless in other ways, so I thought it was time that I share my point of view in what I’ve learned while transitioning to working at home. As a caveat, I work for a national retailer and am an Associate Apparel Buyer- so i definitely have a more defined 9-5 routine that if I was my own boss! (I do think that makes a difference in how I structure my day!)

Alright… lets get to it!

ONE: Getting dressed makes a huge difference!

This is my #1 tip that I think makes the biggest difference in my day- getting dressed helps me feel pulled together and like I am really entering the workplace vs. it being a casual Saturday. Ha! If you follow my IG stories I share my daily looks- and you will see that they definitely aren’t fancy, but they are a step up from my sweats 🙂

TWO: Have a defined work space (even if it’s your dining room table).

For me, in my current apartment I don’t have a desk or office area, so my dining room table has become my new office 🙂 It helps me each day knowing the I’m “going to work” each day when I enter my dining room and I’m “closing up” for the day when I leave the area. I also make it a point to turn on the lights and open my windows when I start my day, and close them up at the end of the day. It helps me feel like I’m turning on/off my office each day and makes it feel (slightly more) official!

THREE: Take some mental health breaks during the day.

I never realized how much i moved during the day at my office- walking to meetings, taking the stairs, running to the printer, pulling samples- It seemed small at the time but my Apple Watch is showing me every day that all those things added up! So while working from home, as much as I can, I am trying to get out and taking quick walks, stretch breaks, sometimes even just taking 30 seconds to run in place to get my body up and moving. It sounds silly but fresh air is becoming my best medicine these days!

FOUR: Blue Light glasses are my new best friend.

After the first few days of working from home my eyes were hurting SO much! The change from working on two big screens at work to being just on my laptop had my eyes SO strained. So I picked up a pair of blue light glasses and they have made such a difference in my eyes. (If you’re interested this is the pair i grabbed!)

    What a cute denim dress, love the printed shoes with it! 🙂

    It’s good you are finding things that work for you to work from home 🙂 I used to work from home once a week so I’m pretty used to it, but it’s very different now with the kids at home and school closed so I need to work and teach them at the same time, haha! but we are muddling through 🙂
