On Finding “Balance” : Plastic vs. Glass Balls

Hey friends! I am so sorry it’s been a bit of radio silence around here- but honestly, it is kind of what inspired today’s post and I think it is a topic that so many of us can relate to! And what’s that topic y’all might ask? Well, it’s this tricky little thing called “balance!”

Let’s take a a second and chat about all the things we are expected to balance (this is obviously my list, but take a minute and think about yours!):

  • Motherhood
  • Being a good wife/partner
  • A career (and a challenging and growing one at that!)
  • Family
  • Friends/Social Life
  • Blogging
  • IG/Social Media
  • Keeping the house clean & tidy
  • Laundry
  • Dishes
  • Cooking & Meal Planning
  • Health/Working Out

Quite frankly this list could go on and on… but I think you can get the idea! And in the past few weeks, since starting my new job, it’s really started to feel like an unmanageable load, which has caused a LOT of stress on my end because I’m a “yes” woman and I do not like to admit that I cannot do something or that I don’t have capacity!

In the past few weeks I’ve hit a bit of a breaking point, and I was reminded of something that one of my role models (& amazing working mama) explained one time, and that was the concept of plastic vs. glass balls and the role they play in finding balance. She told me that we are always going to be juggling our many responsibilities in life, but the trick is deciding which “balls” (responsibilities) are made of plastic and which ones are made of glass. So if there are times when we cannot juggle or balance them all we know which ones are OK to drop. This has resonated with me so deeply during a time that has felt quite out of control!

For me, I know that there are two balls made of glass in my life:

  • My Family (Rob & Eliza)
  • My Job/Career

If I am in a time where I cannot balance it all- these are the two balls which I will not drop. Everything else will just have to take a backseat to those responsibilities (and that’s perfectly ok!!!)

So I guess, this is all a long way of saying, each day I’m working on figuring out a new balance in my life, and how I can best juggle it all without dropping my glass balls. So when it gets quiet on here, it’s because I’m holding up the two balls that are most dear to me- my family and my career. And if I had to pick one, at the end of the day the ball I am most proud to hold and know that I am succeeding in is the wife & mom role- nothing else really matters outside of that. 🙂

If you are finding yourself in a similar season or stage of life I hope this is a helpful way of looking at your priorities and hopefully helping you find some needed balance too!

I did recently ask on IG some ideas around better routines/life hacks that are time savers or make your days run more smoothly and I got some great ideas which I plan to share soon on here. Stay tuned!
