A Letter to Eliza on Her First Birthday

My darling Eliza,

As I sit here the night before your first birthday, I’m filled with “all the feels” and every emotion one could possibly have. I’m so proud of us my little love, somehow you and I (and your wonderful daddy) navigated your first year together! There were so many moments where I found myself lost, confused, worried, and scared (I just want to be the very best mom to you after all!) but we figured it out, together. Your grace and patience with me, even though I often don’t have that same grace & patience for myself, has taught me that sometimes it’s not about being a perfect mom, but about giving all the love you could possibly give. You inspire me every single day!

Oh little love, when your daddy and I think of you the word that comes up every single time is “JOY!” You are just filled to the very brim with joy, and you give it freely to everyone you meet. From waving and clapping at the deli lady in Publix (you’re the highlight of her week!) to our family and friends, you have filled each of us with new hope and joy since the very day you made your entrance into the world.  Daddy and I pray every night that we would continue to fuel your little spirit so that you can keep spreading that joy and your light to the world thoughout your life. It’s something special Eliza and we don’t want you to lose it!

On this night, one year ago, I was laying in a hospital bed knowing sometime in the next 24 hours my life would change forever. From the moment the nurses laid you on my chest, life has never been the same. You were the most magical, beautiful, amazing little girl I’d ever seen and I still think that every day! Together we’ve navigated sleep(less) nights, routines (and how to go off them), bottles and breastfeeding, formula & breastmilk, learning (so so so much!), playing, reflux, and LOVE. Eliza Ann you fill our lives with more love than we’ve ever known and we are so honored every day that God entrusted us to be your parents. Every day as your personality unfolds a little more, we just think there is no one else who could have started our family more perfectly than you. The laughter you bring to us… little love it’s just unmatched!! Your scrunchy nose smile will forever be my favorite- and the way you giggle when we giggle at you. You’re a little joker and I can’t wait to laugh with you every day until forever! From morning walks to kitchen dance parties, to ball tosses, and book readings- you make the ordinary extraordinary and life that much sweeter.

It’s the joy and honor of my life to be your mama Eliza, and I hope you know that I will always be your biggest cheerleader! Thank you for the best year of my life- I love you always Tank!
