How to Handle Change with Grit & Grace

Change is never easy, but it is possible to handle it with grit and grace. I’m sharing how in today’s post!

I think we can all agree that change can sometimes be REALLY tough! If 2020 has brought us anything, most of all it’s brought us changes. Changes in travel, changes in plans, changes in expectations- all sorts of changes! And I’m betting if you’re anything like me, many of these changes were unexpected and sometimes unwelcome. And friends, it can be so very easy for our attitudes to sour as we watch our best laid plans go up in smoke. It can be easy to take on bitterness, anger, frustration- those emotions are quick to boil up to the surface.

But what if we can embrace changes with two of my favorite words, “grit & grace?” What if we can welcome changes as opportunities, adventures, hope for something new? What if different isn’t bad, it’s just, different?

I certainly wish I could tell you there was a magic button that would allow the shift in attitude, but I can’t. However, I can tell you that WE control those feelings/emotions/reactions and it’s how I’ve made it through this crazy and unexpected season. As y’all know, since November I’d been planning my dream wedding- I had every detail planned out and Rob and I were marching towards the day that we had prayed about for years. And then COVID-19 hit and we quickly realized that nothing was going to happen according to plan! And in that moment, when I realized that all my plans we’re about to change, I decided that I could either take in anger and bitterness (which wouldn’t allow any happiness to come through) or I could embrace what was, trust in the Lord, and see how He could (& would!) bless our new plans!

SPOLIER ALERT: He blessed our plans in a BIG way and did more than we ever thought possible to bring joy on our wedding day- even though the day looked nothing like we originally planned. But when I chose to embrace the changes with grit and grace, it allowed me to savor the moments for what they were- and not what I wished they were. And I say that we need both grit & grace because there are moments that are REALLY hard with change- and that’s when you have to dig in and embrace the grit in your soul. And then there are moments when you have to give yourself (and potentially your significant other, friends, family) grace – because change effects everyone in different ways and we can all use a healthy dose of grace!

So I hope that if you too are going through seasons of change, watching plans be altered, cancelling plane tickets or living big life events differently than you thought, that this gives you some tools to still find JOY in the midst of it all! Because friends when we can embrace change with grit and grace it will allow so much joy to shine through! And that is where all the good stuff in live it 🙂

If there is any way I can encourage you through change- please feel free to drop a comment below and I would love to start a dialogue! Wishing y’all the very best!

What a great way to look at this situation, and how wonderful that you ended up having a special day–even if it didn’t look the way you had originally planned. I can’t think of a better way to handle change, “grit and grace” are definitely necessary right now. Great advice and great look–love the gingham and leather together!
